The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has announced a ban on extravagant wedding celebrations in the community. The decision, aimed at upholding Islamic values and easing financial burdens on couples, prohibits lavish receptions, multiple outfit changes, and dance events commonly known as "jams."
According to the Chief Imam, weddings should remain simple and affordable to prevent unnecessary financial strain, particularly on young couples. He emphasized that Islamic teachings encourage modesty in marriage ceremonies, and the rising trend of extravagant celebrations contradicts these principles.
The directive follows concerns that high wedding costs are discouraging some young Muslims from getting married. To ensure compliance, the Chief Imam has engaged key stakeholders, including the Bolewura (Paramount Chief of Bole), local police, media, and youth groups.
While the decision has received mixed reactions, with some supporting the move and others arguing for personal freedom in wedding celebrations, the Chief Imam remains firm in his stance. He believes the directive will help preserve Islamic traditions while making marriage more accessible to all.
This new policy is expected to reshape wedding customs in Bole, reinforcing religious values and promoting a more inclusive approach to marriage.
