A leading voice in civic accountability and governance, Mantse Ayitey, has issued a strong call for the government to launch a full-scale investigation into the controversial One Village, One Dam initiative, particularly contracts allegedly awarded to former Member of Parliament, Hawa Koomson.
In a petition to the government, Ayitey questioned the whereabouts and impact of the One Village, One Dam project, a flagship promise made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under President Nana Akufo-Addo. He alleged that since the NPP exited office, there has been no verifiable evidence of completed or functioning dams across the regions they were promised, despite millions of cedis reportedly spent.
“Since the inception of the One Village, One Dam contract, we have not seen any evidence of any dam constructed by the NPP government. The contract, which was allegedly awarded to Hon. Hawa Koomson, needs to be scrutinized,” Ayite stated.
He called on President JohnDramaniMahama, the current administration, and relevant investigative bodies to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability by probing the project and publishing its findings to the Ghanaian public.
“This was a high-priority campaign promise. The people of Ghana deserve to know the truth. We demand transparency. We want to know what happened to our money,” he added.
Ayitey emphasized that the project was meant to solve critical irrigation and water supply challenges in rural communities, especially in the northern parts of Ghana, but today, there is little to show for the grand promises.
He concluded by urging the government to take swift action not only to investigate those involved but also to retrieve any misappropriated funds that belong to the Ghanaian taxpayer.
The call comes at a time when many citizens are demanding greater accountability for public funds, especially on large-scale development projects that failed to deliver on their intended purpose.
