TUC’s Sudden Voice: Where Were They Under Akufo-Addo? - Mantse Ayitey (NDC)

Mantse Ayitey (NDC)

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has suddenly found its voice, demanding that President John Dramani Mahama halt mass public sector terminations. However, where was this same energy when the Akufo-Addo-led government unleashed policies that rendered thousands of Ghanaians jobless?

Under Akufo-Addo’s administration, we witnessed the abrupt termination of NABCO personnel’s contracts, leaving thousands of young Ghanaians unemployed. The collapse of banks and financial institutions saw thousands more losing their livelihoods. When small-scale mining was crippled by the government’s harsh policies, over a million Ghanaians lost their sources of income. Throughout these crises, TUC remained silent.

Why didn’t TUC speak out then? Why didn’t they fight for the workers who lost their jobs due to poor government decisions? Now that President Mahama is back, they have suddenly regained their voice. Their hypocrisy is glaring. The sore throat they suffered under Akufo-Addo has miraculously healed.

I, alongside every patriotic Ghanaian demand that TUC maintain the same silence they practiced under Akufo-Addo. They cannot suddenly dictate to President Mahama, who is working in the best interest of Ghanaians. The days of selective activism are over. Let them keep the same energy they had during the past eight years.

If TUC wants to be taken seriously, they must prove that their advocacy is not politically motivated. Until then, their sudden outcry holds no weight.
