Top 10 African Countries with the Biggest Economy Ghana is out – See their GDP Per Capita

When mentioning African countries with the highest GDP Ghana is suppose to be among the first five, since the country is endowed with most mineral resources there is. But for our GDP debt clock which is gone above $100bilion the country's economy is no where to be found even within the first 10 most biggest and best economy in Africa. Economists suggest that the current government is doing more harm to Ghana's economy with the rate of borrowing, and if government will desist from further reckless borrowing, Ghana's economy could thrive again to the first five.
The current government is borrowing too frequently which could have posible negetive effect on the country's fortune for a better economy in the near future.

The African continent has always been referred to as “The Sleeping Giant.” Such a terminology usually points at the great potentials Africa has. It is well endowed with resources of all kinds. This applies to natural as well as human resources. In the recent past, African economies have been flourishing with the following countries making up the list of the top 10 largest economies in Africa.

10. Ethiopia
GDP – $72.37 billion
Per Capita – $706.76
About three decades ago, the whole world came to the aid of Ethiopia. The country was going through a dreadful famine. Three decades down the lane, Ethiopia is emerging as one of the top economies in the region. With a GDP of $51 billion dollars, Ethiopia holds the 10th slot. Its economy mainly depends on agriculture. It is the second largest producer of maize in the continent. Coffee and horticulture (flowers) have been doing quite well recently.

9. Kenya
GDP- $70.53 billion
Per Capita – $1,455.36
Kenya has an estimated GDP of over $70 billion dollars. The main economy of the country is the service sector, while agriculture is the second largest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product. In 2005 about 24 percent of GDP was as a result of agriculture, it also accounted for 18% of wage employment and 50% of revenue generated from exports. Apart from the two afore-mentioned sectors, tourism has also grown to become Kenya’s major source of foreign exchange.

8. Sudan
GDP – $95.58 billion
Per Capita – $2,415.04
Until mid-2008, Sudan was infamous for civil wars. This greatly devastated the country. However, after 2008 the country’s economy sprang back to action. As of 2018, the Eastern Africa country had a GDP of $64 billion. Its main economic activities are agriculture, gold and petroleum mining. It is the 3rd largest producer of sesame in the world. Other products include cotton, coffee, cottonseed, wheat, sugarcane, tobacco, peanuts and many more.

7. Libya
GDP – $34.7 billion
Per Capita – $5,602.55
Libya has an estimated GDP of $34.7 billion. The main income source of the country is petroleum mining. It has among the largest oil reserves in the entire world. Better world oil prices have certainly favoured the desert country in the recent past. Libya also has some substantial deposits of steel ore.

Interestingly it is one of the country’s’ that have the highest per capita income in this list. This could be attributed to her small population size

6. Morocco
GDP – $101.4 billion
Per Capita – $2,832.43
The Kingdom of Morocco has for many decades featured among the top economies in the continent. This has largely been attributed to good policies and stable political structures. The country has experienced an obvious increase in its GDP which has increased to $101.4 billion according to a recent report. The main economic activities in the country include fishing, agriculture, and mining. Morocco is among the top producers of cannabis. It also has a good reserve of lead, phosphates, and silver.

5. Angola
GDP – $102.643 billion
Per Capita – $7,300
A few years back, Angola was always in the news for civil wars and political unrest. However, it seems like the 25-year war has finally ceded to peace. The once war-torn country overtook the Kingdom of Morocco to become the fifth largest economy in Africa. Its GDP is valued at $102.643 billion. Its main economic activities are mining of diamonds and petroleum oil and gas.

4. Algeria
GDP – $219.453 billion
Per Capita – $14, 717
Algeria has always been a regional rival to Egypt. The GDP of the North African country is estimated to be $219 billion. The main economic activities driving the country comprise of agriculture, fishing and mining. The country is well gifted with quite a number of valuable minerals. They include iron, copper, zinc, mercury, lignite, calamine, antimony and phosphate. Algeria was able to make the 6th position, based on her Per Capita income which is $7, 095; a step upward from her GDP position.

3. Egypt
GDP – $330.779 billion
Per Capita – $11,800
Egypt famously known as “the jewel of the Nile” was convincingly placed at the third position. Its average GDP annually is estimated at $330.779 billion dollars. For many sceptics, this came as a major surprise taking into account the political unrest in recent years. In fact, many expected the economy to take a dip. Egypt relies heavily on its mineral resources such as copper, natural gas, aluminium, steel and iron ore. It also has a thriving horticultural, and tourism industry. Her Per Capita which is $11,800 is not too bad, occupying the 5th position; just two steps down.

2. South Africa
GDP –  $312.798 billion
Per Capita – $13200
South Africa which has always been revered as the top economy in Africa was again beaten to second place by Nigeria in 2018. The southern Africa state had its GDP valued at approximately $312 billion dollars. In the recent past, South Africa’s economy has been struggling. This has especially been witnessed in the mining industries where reserves for precious minerals such as gold, platinum, palladium, and diamond have been dwindling.

South Africa found itself at #3 position in terms of per capita. With a per capita of $13,200. South Africa is still, in essence, the richest African country.

Nigeria has always been referred to as the giant of Africa, both in terms of economy and population. Since 2014, Nigeria has been topping the list of richest African countries in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The country had overtaken South Africa which had for many decades had an iron grip at the helm. The GDP of Nigeria is currently valued at $594.257 billion. This is majorly attributed to its vast reserves of oil and gas.

Unfortunately, the exploding population of Nigeria has rendered the citizens and inhabitants at large poor in the midst of plenty. Even with all the wealth and first position on the list of biggest economies, Nigeria slips down to #16 with a GDP Per Capita as poor as $6,003.

Dear Your Excellency Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, I have known you since 2006 and followed your profile since that year till now and I wish to crave your concern about the current state of affairs in this country, maybe certain informations are not reaching you well about our current national circumstances.
Dr. Bawumia, our ancestors taught us to fight and be bold enough to face the fact and tell the truth as it is, irrespective of the circumstances it may incur. And I guess democracy is all about opinions, in as much as wisdom is not quantified by age, grey hairiness or position.
I am self employed and at least I have some few workers I manage to pay even though times are tough and income is not matching expenditure, but we hope for the best.
There is one thing Ghanaians are assured of, and that is security and sanity. We are really enjoying our police, military protections and other national security agencies and their effort to stabilise our country as far as peace and justice is concern, and this has moved on from one government to the other since the beginning of the fourth republic and am glad to say that both government has done well in this wise.
Your Excellency, you took over the office of governance since 7th January 2017 and by now I hope many Ghanaians have exhausted their trust for this government, because Mr. Bawumia, things are not well. I personally use a Nissan Sentra 2006 model with 1.8 engine capacity and about 2 years ago GHC20 worth of fuel could transport me from Mallam to Tema and and return on the same fuel and even use some to do other errands, but now it is not like that, I have to buy at least GHC 50 to run same errand and this is making situations unbearable.
Dr. Bawumia, everyone is complaining about fuel, taxi drivers, trotro drivers, private car owners and other vehicle owners, are all saying that the current fuel price is a big blow. Please could you tell us the whole truth about the fast running fuel prices?.

Something must be done about our falling cedi, it is a shame and a big embarrassment to see our cedi performance in the forex market and how our government is unable to resolve the currency situation.
Dr. Bawumia, with all due respect, is there no other measure to apply in other to relinquish this giant behaviors of the dollar on our cedi?

Before the 2016 elections, you promised us good news for the cedi, but since you assumed office nothing is done about it and this is so disheartening, it is making our international trade and businesses so difficult to control and as such the economy is broadly affected.
Because of this, goods and services are going higher per day and livelihood is become so discomforting, we don't know how information reaches the presidency, but to be honest with you, tampers are rising against this government and one day this government may not be able to control the rage of the people, something must be done.
Our GDP debt clock for this year has reached above $6billion and we ask the question, were are those monies?

What were the monies used for?
Is there anything government is not doing right?
We must be very careful about the situation, it may plunge this country into a serious mess.
Dr. Bawumia, if your economic theories are not working for you, with all due respect, try the takashi economic plans, the long talks and fables are becoming too much, something must be done.
If the free shs is consuming more than necessary, change the system of running it, change the structure and allow other parts of the economy to also have a fair share of the national cake.

Aggrieved Menzgold customers to hold nationwide demonstration

Customers of gold dealership company, Menzgold Ghana Limited, say they will embark on a nationwide demonstration by the end of this October, to express their displeasure at the company’s failure to pay them the extra value on their investments as promised earlier.

According to the spokesperson of a group calling it self ‘Aggrieved Menzgold Customers’, Timothy Binob, the exact date for the demonstration will be announced at a press conference to be held later this week.

Mr. Binob explained that the customers all over the country are expected to take part in the demonstration.

Speaking to Citi News, he also said customers are yet to receive any official communication from the company on what percentage of the total value of gold traded will be refunded to them.

The aggrieved customers have demanded a fifty percent refund within four weeks, but Menzgold says it may be able to pay only a portion of what is being demanded.

“It is a nationwide demonstration, and Tarkwa and Kumasi will all be part. So we are liaising with them and all of them will also come with their buses. We will convene a press conference very soon maybe at the end of this week so we announce the date of the demonstration.”

“We have been promised by the firm and for several times they have not fulfilled their promises. They gave us a four week period to come out with the percentage they will be paying, but none of the customers have received anything. No customer has received any money; not even a single one.”

‘We may pay in 90-days if you terminate your transaction’ – Menzgold

The company has also said that customers who wish to terminate their investment transaction with them, will receive a full payment of their investment in 90 days if the ongoing misunderstanding with statutory institutions is resolved.

Menzgold made this known in a statement signed by Head of Communications of the company, Nii Amarh Amartefio. The statement was part of an agreement reached with a section of its customers at a meeting held in Accra.

Pastor sues Menzgold over delayed payments

Meanwhile, a customer of Menzgold, has already sued the firm for breach of contract and misrepresentation.

The customer said to be a Reverend Minister is demanding the payment of his accrued interest and GHC 24,000 principal investments which he allegedly deposited with Menzgold on April 20, 2018. Rev. Joseph Appiah Odei in his writ said he deposited 12 pounds of gold estimated at Ghc24,000 for 12 months, and paid a non-refundable commission of Ghc1,200 to Menzgold.

He’s the first aggrieved Menzgold customer to take such an action, although several others have demonstrated and only threatened to sue.

High profile Menzgold customers silent due to stigma – Customers reveal

Members of the group have revealed that some well-known individuals and institutions in the country who are customers of Menzgold are not speaking up due to the fear of stigmatization.

In an interview on Citi TV’s Point of View show with Bernard Avle earlier this month, three bold customers who agreed to share their experiences with the company said they know certain high profile people in society who have their monies locked up with Menzgold but cannot agitate or speak up for fear of being ridiculed and criticized.

One of the aggrieved customers said in the past, some people including a Member of Parliament also branded Menzgold customers as lazy people who did not want to do any hard work.

Menzgold has not been able to pay matured returns to its investors since the Security and Exchanges Commission (SEC) ordered it to suspend its gold trading operations to the public.

The company in an attempt to call the bluff of SEC came up with a payment schedule to pay its clients, but the said payments have been postponed for three consecutive times.

The delayed payments continue to stir up anger among Menzgold customers, a situation they have vowed to use all means possible to resolve.

We can’t pay dividends due to SEC’s action – Menzgold

Menzgold had earlier said it is unable to pay its customers matured dividends on their gold investments due to the action that was taken against it by the SEC.

“The gold collectibles offered for trade by patrons of our gold vault market product are subject to our quality controls and traded for profit which is shared as an extra value with the product owner or trader. Any act, order or instruction, therefore, designed or decreed to forbid Menzgold from trading makes it impossible to generate any revenue whatsoever out of which extra values are charged and paid to those entitled,” Menzgold said in a statement dated September 25, 2018.

But the SEC did not agree with Menzgold’s position, saying its action did not stop them from paying customers returns on already existing investments.

Meanwhile, the SEC has indicated that it is yet to receive adequate information from Menzgold after it ordered the suspension of its gold trading business.

Menzgold has sued the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bank of Ghana.

The company in its suit is seeking from the court an order directing the two institutions to stop interfering in its business.

They are also asking the court to stop the Bank of Ghana and the SEC from publishing what they have described as “derogatory notices” against their business.

The Chief Executive of the company, Nana Appiah, had a few days ago assured that they were preparing to release all locked up cash.

In a late night message on Twitter however, Nana Appiah urged his clients to exercise some restraint for the protection of his business.

Since 2006 we heard a lot about Dr. Bawumia and the praises that were showed on him for economic know how. Ghanaians were expecting that giving Bawumia just 1yr could transform the economy of the country to an amazing level, but what we are seeing now shows that the vice president is just a mouth mouth economist.
Truth must be told the hard way, not a single positive change is added to our economy, but rather woes and severe hardship. I recently heard the vice president questioning the opposition about any social interventions they implemented in their tenure, is he serious?
Governance is not for comedians and jokers, but serious business and our government must understand that it is about time they take things serious and end this excruciating difficulties in the country.
Mr. Nii Aryitey said, NABCO and Free Education can never stabilize the economy but rather burden the economy, he further said that NABCO is a waste and the policies around it were recklessly made.
He further noted that, government must be very careful about the economy, our national debt only for this year is about $6billion and this is no good news, free shs and NABCO is gradually sinking our government.
If you want to implement a social intervention, proper measures must be taken, no jobs and yet we have NABCO, not enough class rooms and proper facilities for education and yet we say free education. But in all this we must blame Bawumia, he controls economic affairs and trust me the guy is taking reckless decisions that may plug this country into infinite hardship and he must be stopped.
Petrol prices and the dollar is not only exposing Bawumia's unintelligence, it is reducing his value as an economist, I honestly see him as a wayside economist whose economic ideas are full of lies and recklessness.
President Mahama saw the need to improve our infrastructures to maximize opportunities in the country and attract investors. We need to continue his good works, he was following UAE footsteps to making Ghana a beautiful country, and this is what promotes investor confidence. When your roads are good and all necessary infrastructures are in place, business booms, not the reckless Free Education and NABCO.

A lenders and financial company located in various parts of the country called Quick Credit is actually contributing to the hardships in this country.
This financial company is registered under the Ghana Lenders association, they give loans to traders, business persons and various institutions. This company charges an extravagant 12% interest on every loan to their clients, and this abnormal interest is already killing businesses because their mode of repayment is also very hash and very unfriendly. They give only 13 weeks for one to finish paying the loans plus a whooping 36% within that period of 13 weeks which is absolutely 3months 1 week. One must pay the loans on weekly basis, especially on Fridays and client is not given a space for default and when client's default even a day within these number of weeks given for repayment the embarrassment they face is beyond all standards.
The government of Ghana must sit up and clear these economic threatening companies from the country. Many petty traders who innocently took loans from this company had their shops closed as a result of their ignorance to the rates charged on the loans.
I personally took GHC5000 from them and pays GHC 5277 every Friday for a period of 13 weeks plus a processing fee of GHC 250

Therefore: Amount taken GHC5000
                    GHC 527×13weeks =  Ghc 6851
                     GHC6851 + 250 processing = GHC7101
: You are paying GHC2101 as interest on GHC 5000 for a short period of 13weeks
So we have more them 36% on Each Loan irrespective of amount taken.

This is as bad as hot, President must stop this nuisance.

The former president of Ghana and the founder of the main opposition party "NDC" Jerry John Rawlings has said in an interview that the party structures were misplaced after NDC took over governance in 2008, and lamented bitterly about the situation and believed that it was one of the main reasons why his party lost the 2016 elections. Akuffo Addo's minister nearly killed by Invincible Forces, he escaped by running away.

Monitoring and Evaluation minister, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei is said to have been whisked away in near attack by some aggrieved members in his Tafo/Pankrono constituency in the Ashanti.

Dr. Akoto was at a party meeting at Pankrono Sunday evening when the youth stormed the venue to question him over promises made to secure them jobs.

The Irate Youth in their quest to register their displeasure stormed the whole place and ended up destroying the properties at the said meeting.

The Youth who was believed to belong to the Kumasi based Delta Force postulated the minister promised them jobs which saw them to have massively campaign for the party and that he has since turned his back for them in the grassroots ever since they won election.

Whilst other members of the Delta Force also said the MP has not been responding to their calls. He only came to the constituency once in 2 years as the Evaluation minister but didn't even ask of them and later got back to Accra.

The Youth believed all these attitude of the MP accelerated their anger to storm the meeting and subsequently demolished the available resources

"We learned he will be coming for a meeting today. So I organized the boys and went to the venue. We had wanted to ask him the numerous promises he made to us when the party was in opposition but those around him didn't allow that. They took him to his car. We also push the chairs and other things to the ground and that brought chaos at the whole place".

He said, many institutions and individuals have benefited a lot from Menzgold and more of our youth have jobs with Menzgold, Zylofon and other businesses and companies set up by Nana Appiah Mensah and if by the grace of God he is voted for in the 2020 elections, he will restore Mezgold and regularize their system. He said "MENZGOLD HAS COME TO STAY".

The Ex-President president further said, NAM1 is a pride Ghanains must protect and encourage in other to help improve the economy, he therefore edged the people of Ghana and Menzgold customers to excersice some patient in other to help survive Menzgold.
He said the outcry to save the institution by musicians and other celebrities in the country is the right move and they should keep it up.
