Accra, Ghana – Thursday, August 7, 2025
A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked national outrage after two known New Patriotic Party (NPP) social media activists, identified as Abena Brago and her friend, made shocking comments regarding Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two Ministers of State and other government officials.
In the now-viral video, the two women were seen laughing and expressing regret that the tragic helicopter crash did not involve President John Dramani Mahama. Their words widely condemned as callous and politically motivated have drawn intense backlash from the public across the country.
The crash, which occurred near Adansi in the Eastern Region, plunged the nation into mourning. While investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing, the comments by Brago and her companion have raised fresh concerns about the toxic nature of political discourse in Ghana and the potential for incitement through social media.
Critics say the remarks go beyond partisan politics and amount to a veiled threat against the life of the sitting President. Some observers have gone further to suggest that the New Patriotic Party, by tolerating such rhetoric from its known online voices, is sending dangerous signals to the Ghanaian public.
“This is not only unpatriotic but a potential indication that the crash may not have been a mere accident,” one commentator stated on a morning show. “The government must take this very seriously. Ghanaians demand to know if this tragedy was part of a more sinister plot.”
Social media platforms have been flooded with condemnation, with many users calling for the arrest and prosecution of Abena Brago and her friend for making inflammatory statements that could destabilize the nation. Human rights groups and media analysts are also urging the National Security Secretariat to investigate both the crash and the viral video as matters of national interest.
So far, there has been no official response from the NPP leadership regarding the conduct of the two activists. However, several NDC supporters have pointed fingers at the opposition party, warning that such behavior contributes to political instability and undermines Ghana’s peace and democratic gains.
Calls are growing louder for the government to treat the crash not merely as an aviation accident, but as a potential national security threat. The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and National Security, is currently conducting a full investigation into the cause of the helicopter failure.
Meanwhile, the families of the deceased ministers continue to receive condolences from all over the country, even as the nation grapples with the shock and pain of the loss, and the disturbing political undertones surrounding it.
