After years of restraint, the U.S. and Germany are now allowing Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory. Germany has even agreed to release its long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, a major shift in policy.
Since Russia invaded, Ukraine has been restricted from using long-range weapons, largely to avoid escalating the war into a wider regional or even global conflict. But this limitation has given Russia an unfair advantage.
Russia’s justification, that Ukraine shouldn’t join NATO or host Western weapons near its borders, is weak. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and has every right to choose its alliances.
With these new missile approvals, Ukraine now has a chance to hit military targets deep in Russia. If Russian lives and infrastructure are affected, internal pressure may force President Putin to reconsider his war. This could be the only way to bring it to an end.
